CDC Farmer’s Market

September 6, 2018

Dear Parents,

Market Day Today

It’s market day
Hooray, hooray!
Spy the wonder
on display:
rainbow carrots
herb bouquets,
heaps of berries
sample trays.

Farmers chat.
Musicians play.
A neighbor –
stroller –
dog parade.

Join the party;
don’t delay!
Come celebrate;
it’s market day!

CDC’s Market Days are scheduled to begin tomorrow morning.  Our featured vegetable will be the tomato, which is actually a fruit.  Each child will receive one vegetable per week for September, two for October, and one for November just before Thanksgiving. Our neighborhood chefs will supply a delicious recipe to accompany the veggie.

Throughout the week children will experience the week’s featured vegetable through tastings, literature, music, drama, art, and our CDC garden for observation and exploration. Your child will come to our Farm Charm Market to select their vegetable and bring it home in a market bag. The market bag must be returned to school the following Monday. Our school’s garden education/club has been working very hard to make this an exciting time for your child, as well as introducing them to a different way to look at vegetables and encouraging them to try something they may not have and eating healthy.  Every featured vegetable and herb is grown here in our garden.

Due to the size of our school’s garden and following health guidelines, Market Day vegetables will come from local farms through our food distributor Sysco. This week’s vegetable comes from Pacific Tomato Growers Farm in Melta, Virginia. We have been worried because our local farmers’ crops have struggled due to the amount of rain we experienced this summer.

We’re excited and say, “Hooray!” for Market Days!  We hope that you will be too.

See You at the Market!

Secethia, Venicia, Katrina, Bernita, Muntaha, Monica, Keisha, Bonnie, and Jason.
Your Garden Education/Club Members.
